PK-6 Licensure and Competency Review

DESE allows teachers to apply for Competency Review in order to become certified in DLCS PreK-6. The competency review process (Option VIII: Seminar or workshop) is described in detail on DESE’s website and in the Competency Review Guide. CSforMA will provide a Competency Review Letter for each of the PK-6 DLCS workshops you take with us.

Option VIII: Seminar or workshop: Documented by [a] letter from the organization that provided the seminar or workshop.

CSforMA offers three workshops that, all together, cover the 12 Subject Matter Requirements (SMKs) required for PreK-6 Competency Review. After a person completes each course through CSforMA, they can request a Letter of Attestation for that course that lists the SMKs covered.

  • Building Research Competency: (2 days, 10 hours total) SMK #5
    • One SMK, 10 hours: SMK #5
    • 10 hours, either in-person or virtual or hybrid
  • PreK-6 Digital Literacy: (5 days, 40 hours total)
    • Four SMKs, 40 hours, SMK #1, #2, #3, #4
    • 5 days in-person, summer
  • PreK-6 Computer Science Part 1 & Part 2 (9 days, 70 hours total)
    • Seven SMKs, 70 hours: #6, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, #12
    • 5 days in-person (40 hours), summer
    • 4 days in-person (30 hours), over two weekends, typically in late October and early December

The CSforMA PD page shows the dates and times for each of these courses.  Anyone hoping to receive a Letter of Attestation for a course must attend all of the sessions that are part of the course.
